Many viral ads for films that are created today fail in several areas – they are not creative, they do not generate interest in the film, or the general public has no idea that the advertisement is even a viral ad. The marketing team at Disney/Pixar has set up a campaign for Monsters University that definitely falls on the clever side. The trailers and ads that Disney/Pixar releases for its films in North America deliberately keep more of the film’s plot hidden from audiences. The international trailers, though, are known for being more revealing in the hopes that additional interest is generated in the increasingly important markets overseas. Aside from Mike and Sulley and the few nameless monsters we caught in the Monsters University teaser trailer last year, we were unsure of who else the film’s cast would include. Surely, with the film taking place on a college campus, the students would play an essential role. At Toy Fair a few weeks back, Disney/Pixar detailed several of the new characters that we would see in the prequel film. During last week’s Toy Fair presentation, Monsters University director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae unveiled several new characters that made up the fraternity that Mike and Sulley would join, Oozma Kappa. After attending a preview of Monsters University toys at the NY Toy Fair on Monday morning, actor John Goodman, the voice of Sulley, made a pit stop at Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Goodman spoke about his upcoming films briefly, including his role as the lovable blue monster. He brought along an exclusive clip from the film, a scene that appears in the trailer that was released earlier in the day. Watch the humorous clip after the break!
Yesterday, amidst a preview of upcoming Monsters University toys, director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae discussed the film’s plot and characters with those in attendance at the press event. We have been anxiously anticipating a new trailer for Monsters University for months. Aside from the teaser trailer that was released alongside Brave way back in June, the campaign for the film has mostly involved viral marketing which included a ridiculously detailed college website for the fictional school. Today, in conjunction with Toy Fair, where Disney is previewing toys and merchandise tied to the upcoming film, a brand new trailer has been released. Check it out in HD after the break!
We have been eagerly anticipating new details, concept art, and video from Monsters University. After the film’s impressive viral campaign kicked off with a website and advertisement for the fictional school, Pixar has been keeping the prequel close to its chest, as we have yet to see a full-length trailer. There may be some new material debuting at Toy Fair next week during the scheduled press event previewing toys and merchandise that will tie into the film.
