‘Brave’ To Focus On Mother-Daughter Relationship, Will Overlook Romance

Pixar has taken a lot of heat over the past decade for its lack of female protagonists. Then, when Brave was announced, the news of a lead female character brought yelps of joy, but also a bit of uneasiness since the lead would be a princess. The last thing the public wanted to see was Pixar do a clichéd character, though, there was hope for a unique take on a princess story given the studio’s reputation for creative and imaginative stories. In the last issue of TIME Magazine, there is an in-depth article that brings confirmation to that hope – Brave is set to subvert the princess story by ignoring romance and focusing on the mother-daughter relationship. D23 2011: Updated Brave Synopsis Provides More Details + Notes On Cast and Crew

In our extensive coverage of the D23 Expo this past week, we have shared much of the new details from the panels held at the show. We were shown more new Brave footage than we have ever seen from a Pixar film that is still one year away from its release. Additionally, new plot details emerged, such as what those little beautiful blue lights seen in the teaser and poster are and what they can do. Disney also released an updated synopsis for the film, which fills in some holes on what leads to the mess that main character Merida creates. Brave Director Mark Andrews Reveals New Plot Details

Many are fascinated by Pixar’s 2012 film, Brave, as it is the studio’s first film where the protagonist of the story is a female. Not only that, but it is the first fantasy film to come out of the Emeryville-based studio. The teaser trailer and the concept art that have been displayed show off a darker tone than we have gotten from other films such as Monsters, Inc. and Ratatouille. Plot details have been scarce – we know that Princess Merida unleashes a curse upon her kingdom and she must set things right. Director Mark Andrews spoke with The Daily Record about the film, and he revealed a few more details about the film’s story. Read on but beware of possible spoilers (at least for those who want to know nothing about the plot), as Disney/Pixar has not released some of these details. [Read more…]

First Look: Brave Concept Art. Also, Behind-the-Scenes Changes.

EW.com has an exclusive first look at some concept art for Brave, Disney/Pixar’s 13th feature film, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in the summer of 2012. A few years ago, there were a few pieces of artwork that were released when the film was first announced, but in a matter of a few years the look of a film can change. These new pieces of artwork remind us that while Brave is Pixar’s first fairytale, the studio is not looking to deliver your usual princess film. View the artwork (and an updated description of the film) below.

UPDATE: Added hi-res versions of the images. [Read more…]
