SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques) is an annual conference and exhibition highlighting computer graphics. Each year, Pixar’s RenderMan, the studio’s software used throughout the movie industry that renders 3D animation and visual effects, has a great booth at the conference, where talks are held and great giveaways are handed out. Wind-up teapots have become a staple giveaway at the booth, with a line of hundreds winding up and down the show floor, as they wait for a chance to get their hands on the collectible. While last year’s design was based on Mr. Potato Head, this year’s remains a mystery (UPDATE: no more! – the design has been revealed below). PIXAR: 25 Years of Animation Commercial
The fantastic “PIXAR: 25 Years of Animation” exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California has been open for two months now. The museum just unleashed a TV commercial for the exhibit and has posted it on their YouTube channel. It is great to see several pieces in the ad which are showcased at the museum. You start to get a feeling for the beauty of the pieces of artwork, the wonder of which is only surpassed by seeing them in person. View the commercial below: [Read more…]
“PIXAR: 25 Years of Animation” Exhibit Review
Illustrator Jerrod Maruyama recently visited the new “PIXAR: 25 Years of Animation” exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California. His review of the exhibit is below:
It is easy to get caught up in the brilliant, technical sheen of a Pixar film. The reflections of light on copper pots in Gusteau’s kitchen, the way Sully’s hair moves in a breeze, or even something as simple as a garbage bag stretching to the breaking point by Rex’s tail – all are dazzling feats of technology that get a lot of attention with each new release. Pixar: 25 Years of Animation Exhibition (Update)

The Pixar exhibit that was originally displayed in 2005-2006 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City has been touring the world. Now, the extraordinary exhibit is coming back to the United States, specifically to the Oakland Museum of California. With its trek back to the country, it has also undergone a name change. Originally known as “Pixar: 20 Years of Animation”, the exhibit is now more appropriately titled “Pixar: 25 Years of Animation”. [Read more…]
