Newt is the only announced Pixar feature film that failed to make it to theaters. Set to tell the story of a male and female newt forced together in order to extend their dying species, the film was being directed by Gary Rydstrom, who previously directed the short, Lifted. However, Newt was cancelled, which left eager fans, who had become caught up in the idea and gorgeous concept art, perplexed. The reason for why the film was cancelled has finally been revealed.
More Concept Art From Pixar’s Canceled Film ‘Newt’
Usually when Disney/Pixar announces a project, the film makes its way into theaters a few years later. While films in development at the studio have no doubt been canceled before, Pixar shocked many when it publicly canceled newt in 2010, a film that was to be headed by Lifted director Gary Rydstrom. Pixar acknowledged the cancellation in a creative way, by releasing several pieces of concept art from the film. ‘Brave’ References Canceled Pixar Film ‘Newt?’
Back in 2010, there came shocking news (at least for those who follow Pixar) that the highly-anticipated film, Newt, had been cancelled. Employees had done years of work developing the film, so it was surprising to see the film taken off the production schedule indefinitely. Pixar likely realized how much of the employees’ great work would never be seen, and released concept art online (seen here and here). The film has lived on, though, in the form of an easter egg in Toy Story 3. We have also found what may very well be another easter egg for the now-deceased film in Brave. More Newt Concept Art Hits The Web
Last year, Pixar made a fascinating choice and released concept art for newt, a film project the studio had been working on for a good while but ultimately decided to cancel. Displayed on the Facebook page for Disney/Pixar, the artwork was a great view behind the doors of the animation company, but also made the public long for more. Well, production artist and character designer Jason Deamer heeded the call and shared 11 more pieces of concept art, which the German Pixar Blog alertly caught. [Read more…]
