Toy Story 4 is the sequel to what is considered one of the greatest trilogies of all time. The Toy Story franchise has yet to have a dud or even a subpar film, as all of the previous films have been beloved by both critics and audiences around the world. Some may view one as better than the others or have a favorite, but it is difficult to argue with the high quality of each one of these films.

THREE-IN-ONE – He’s not a fork. He’s not a spoon. And most of all, Forky is not a toy! At least that’s what he thinks. Bonnie created him from an assortment of supplies Woody’s retrieved from the kindergarten trash can. So, it’s no wonder Forky feels strongly that he’s trash and not a toy. ©2019 Disney/Pixar. Tom Hanks is throwing his weight behind Toy Story 4 and making a strong statement of support about its greatness. Yes, he is inherently biased because he is such a large part of the film and the franchise. Also, you rarely have an actor or actress who comes out and claims that the film they are promoting is not good. However, you don’t often hear an actor argue that the film they made is one of the best ever. Tom Hanks did just that.
In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week, Hanks at one point says:
“It sounds ridiculous because I’m in it, but it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen in my life.”
The quote is in the video at the 2:13 mark, and can be watched at the end of this article.
That is quite the quote from Hanks. It doesn’t seem to be a random throwaway line he is making in support of the film, as critics seem to be throwing their support behind the film as well, as they did for the previous films. I don’t love Rotten Tomatoes, due to its oversimplification of reviews; but, it remains an ever-popular way of seeing how a film is generally judged by critics. The Rotten Tomatoes scores for the first three Toy Story films are some of the best ever seen on the review aggregator:
- Toy Story: 100% (83 reviews)
- Toy Story 2: 100% (166 reviews)
- Toy Story 3: 98% (303 reviews, 5 of which were unfavorable)
Rotten Tomatoes has added many more critics into its garden, which you could argue makes it harder for a film to maintain a 100% score. Even so, Toy Story 4 seems to be matching the previous films in the level of its reviews. So far, with 90 reviews counted, the film is sitting at 100%. It almost seems inevitable that the film will earn a negative rating or several before all reviews are accounted for. Still, it is already an incredible feat for the franchise. When you have a highly rated franchise like Toy Story, you would think that Pixar would eventually stumble. Just when you thought that there was no way that a third sequel could maintain the incredible bar that the first film set, we get Toy Story 4, which seems all but on its way to reaching those incredible heights all over again. Insane.
The Jimmy Kimmel interview is rather entertaining, with a great bit on the “talking points” that Disney provides its talent when promoting a film. Hanks discusses things he was encouraged by Disney to say and other things that he was discouraged from speaking about. It is a rare look behind the Disney marketing curtain that only an actor like Tom Hanks could give us, as he is one of the biggest actors on the face of the earth, and he will totally get away with it. Hilarious stuff! Watch the interview below:
Toy Story 4 arrives in theaters later this week, on June 21st!
