All Pixar-related eyes are currently pointing toward the approaching Toy Story 4. The film reunites characters that first graced the screen over 20 years ago – those iconic characters have gone on to become household names. Pixar is developing its next film, an original one, that could unleash a new group of characters that audiences fall in love with – could next year’s Onward deliver? Get your first look at them in the film’s first trailer!
Onward is billed as a fantasy film with elves, trolls, dragons, and magic. The film’s story synopsis is below:
Set in a suburban fantasy world, Disney•Pixar’s “Onward” introduces two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there.
Those two teenage elves are played by actors Chris Pratt and Tom Holland, who are working on a Pixar film for the first time. Returning to Pixar after many years is actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus who last voiced Atta in A Bug’s Life. We see these characters in action for the first time in the trailer that debuted during the NBA Finals this evening. Watch it here:
The trailer may start out with an ominous tone with the statement, “In times of old the world was magical but times change,” but it quickly takes a comedic turn with an airplane flying into a shot you would expect to see in any medieval fantasy film. Right after that, you see a newspaper with the headline, “Centaur Gallop Poll Results” and a sign that says, “Cash4Gems.” I particularly chuckled at the way unicorns are presented as the rats/rodents of the film’s universe. Given how unicorns are often seen as magical and powerful beings, this was rather humorous.
Onward is being directed by Dan Scanlon and produced by Kori Rae. They last collaborated on Monsters University. The film’s story is inspired by Scanlon who has stated, “At Pixar we try to create stories that come from some kind of personal truth.” He added, “This film was inspired by my own relationship with my brother.” Hearing that, it sounds like the elves played by Pratt and Holland, will be heavily inspired by the relationship between Scanlon and his brother.
Speaking about the actors, the filmmakers have commented on what they believe the actors bring to their characters’ personalities. Rae has mentioned that Pratt “brings equal parts huge heart and fantastic humor to his character,” while Scanlon points to Holland as having “an infectious charm and sincerity that makes you root for him in every character he plays.” Joining them and Louis-Dreyfus is actress Octavia Spencer.
I am excited to see Pixar tell another original story with some heart. This tweet from Pixar’s Austin Madison describing the film as a mix of Tolkien and John Hughes has me super pumped:
If you've ever wanted to see a Tolkien story as told through a John Hughes lens, this is the quest you've been waiting for. As a story artist on this film, I can personally guarantee you that van will earn its place among the noblest of steeds. https://t.co/CPdete5IJM
