When Toy Story 3 saw release in 2010, the marketing for the film included commercials that were pitch perfect homages to toy commercials from the 80s and 90s. The ads were not only incredibly creative but were also very funny. You know what they say – “if it ain’t broke…”. The Toy Story 4 marketing team just released a new TV spot that seeks to recreate some of the success of the previous film’s pre-release excitement.
Duke Caboom, a daredevil toy dressed in a white jumpsuit, is voiced by Keanu Reeves. He rides a motorcycle and is supposed to be capable of death-defying midair tricks. Watch the commercial and see if you notice any obstacles that stands in this toy’s way:
Hilarious! If Duke is able to capture a fraction of the magic seen in this ad, he could be yet another great addition to the Toy Story world. His character description speaks to some of the challenges he will face. It may even remind you of the journey that a certain Lightyear character had to make years ago:
DUKE CABOOM is a 1970s toy based on Canada’s greatest stuntman. Riding his powerful Caboom stunt-cycle, Duke is always prepared to show off his stunt poses with confidence and swagger. However, Woody learns quickly that Duke has an Achilles heel: He has never been able to do the awesome stunts advertised in his own toy commercial. For years, Duke has been sitting in an antique store, constantly reliving the failures of his tragic past.
Film producer Jonas Rivera is excited to share the character with the world. He had this to say about Duke: “The first time Josh Cooley and I talked with Keanu about the role, Keanu became Duke Caboom. Keanu was asking great questions that dug deep to find the soul of the character. At one point he stood up on the table in the middle of Pixar’s atrium and struck poses while proclaiming victory. It was so funny. It’s all in the movie and it’s all Keanu.”
I cannot wait to see more of Duke Caboom and hear what Keanu brings to the role. We will see way more when Toy Story 4 arrives in theaters on June 21st.
