PixArt: August Feature II – Merida Takes Aim

August 21, 2014 by Jerrod Maruyama 2 Comments

The character designs of Samantha Youssef certainly have a lot of charm and personality. But what really shines through is their construction. With each pose and gesture, you see her mastery of life drawing. In a time of heavily stylized characters, it is refreshing to see such fun designs that also happen to be grounded in some serious drawing skills. Whether it’s Bonnie and Clyde or Cleopatra, Samantha brings skill and grace to each creation. A graduate of Sheridan College, Samantha worked in the animation industry (including Disney) for years before founding Studio Technique in Montreal, Canada. In addition to animation freelance projects, she serves as Artistic Director for the studio and teaches life drawing and masterclasses to artists and animators from all over the world. You can check out her site for more examples of her amazing work and read more about the fascinating artist. It will make you want to practice your life drawing! Our sincere thanks to Samantha for contributing this wonderful Merida piece, for which we are so grateful. You can take a closer look at it after the break!PixArt by Samantha Youssef

I currently live in…

Montreal, Canada

I consider my hometown to be…

I feel I’ve been very fortunate in my life to have lived in many places around the world. There are several places that have been very important to me where I have close friends and family, so I don’t feel that there is one that I consider exclusively my home.

My Favorite Pixar Movie is …

The Incredibles. I love the design in that film and the story is great. I also really love Monsters Inc. and UP. I loved the visuals in Brave – I thought that was an artistically beautiful film.

My Favorite Pixar character is…

Pixar has created some great characters, so it’s hard to isolate one! I have favorites for different reasons. I love Russell, who is so endearing and genuine. I always liked Mirage in The Incredibles – I think she didn’t make the best choices to get to where she was, but when it came down to it in the end she did what was right, despite being someone who had no one in the story to support her.

Tell us about your piece:

I loved the look of Brave, and I’ve always been drawn to animating female characters, so I felt like doing a piece with Merida. I wanted to have a simple graphic feel but maintain a sense of life and movement.

Who/What inspires you?

People inspire me. I love sketching people and getting ideas from how people live. I love John Singer Sargent. His work breathes and is alive. It’s an intangible that he captures brilliantly that I am still trying to understand. Also, Robin Muller is a writer and illustrator who I have been fortunate to know who inspires me as an artist and a person.

Recommend something, anything to our readers:

I would say to artists, to draw from life as much as you can. Life drawing is the best way to improve, nature offers so much to expand your shape and graphic vocabulary. Books I’ve learned the most from reading are The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, and The Practice and Science of Drawing by Harold Speed.

Shameless self-promotion:

I run a studio that specializes in artistic training for both studio artists and aspiring artists. Most of the time I do masterclasses at animation studios, but there are online classes for individual artists here too: studio-technique.com

My own personal work is mostly on my blog, but I did start a tumblr and a twitter account recently.

  • A new Onward poster was released today! Onward is Pixar’s “suburban fantasy adventure” starring Chris Pratt and Tom Holland. Also, a pair of pants. When the Lightfoot brothers try to bring back their father, who they lost years ago, the magic goes haywire and only half of their father has returned. The story of the film centers on the characters racing against the clock to reunite with their dad. I can already feel the tears!

  • “Our mission with Andy is complete.” That line from Toy Story 3 has stuck with me for almost a decade now. It made me think of all the toys I’ve left behind throughout my life. The Toy Story films have deeply increased my feelings of guilt toward the toys that I stopped playing with or gave away. Still, the message in Toy Story 3 was that your relationship with the toys may change, but the simple act of finding a new home for the toys could give so much meaning to other people’s lives. Now, I refuse to throw away toys - I either keep them for myself, give them to my daughter, or find them a new home.
I really do feel that these films have changed people’s lives. I have to imagine there are many other people out there who second-guess throwing toys in the trash and instead give them to others who can create happy memories.
Thanks to Disney for sending these toys my way to help me tell my toy story!

  • “I love you, Giggle McDimples!” - my daughter, reminding me why she’s the cutest. I bought her this Giggle McDimples toy weeks before she had even seen Toy Story 4. Usually, she doesn’t like playing with toys based on characters she’s never seen before. BUT, the second that she saw Giggle, she wouldn’t put her down for hours. I would say there are a few reasons why:
1) she loved the design of the character and the toy
2) that great personality brought to life by @allymaki.

I’m so glad that I captured this on video. Taking photos is wonderful but always remember to capture some videos of your life, too! There’s something special about moving pictures and audio that transport you back to that memory. If you have a toy story to tell or video to share, post it on your feed and use the hashtag #whatsyourtoystory!
