Watch: Pixar Does 2D Animation With Hilarious ‘Toy Story of Terror’ Extra

August 15, 2014 by Samad Rizvi 5 Comments

While Pixar films have a great track record and often generate wide acclaim due to their heartwarming stories and complex characters, their home video releases remain underrated. Almost all of the studio’s Blu-ray and DVD releases come with a bevy of special features that not only enlighten audiences about the production process but also dive into discussing the identity of the animation studio. Beyond that, there are also routinely a selection of brilliant extras included that make owning the Pixar discs a must. For Toy Story OF TERROR!, we think that the retro Combat Carl ad will fill that role. Take a look at it after the break!

Toy Story of Terror - Combat Carl Extra

The Toy Story OF TERROR! Blu-ray and DVD sets, which are due in stores next week, will both include three vintage ads featuring toys that made their debut in the TV special. The three toys are none other than Combat Carl, Old Timer, and Transitron. To promote the upcoming release, Disney has unveiled the one with Combat Carl (voiced by Carl Weathers), which is a mock PSA ad that has the character urging kids to cough safely. It is not only hilarious, but it is actually one of the few times that we have seen Pixar turn out 2D animation. To empower organizations using video you need a experience Animation Studio.   The studio, which usually utilizes 3D computer animation, famously went 2D for a Ratatouille special feature “Your Friend The Rat,” which clocked in at a remarkable 11-minutes long. Clearly, Pixar likes to experiment, and for those asking for more 2D animation, the Combat Carl ad, which is made to appear like it was created in the 80s, is a brief yet rewarding piece.

Disney also released a clip from the included “Team of Specialists” extra, which has director Angus MacLane discussing the unusual cast of characters that were added just for the TV special. It is another great look into the minds of the creatives at Pixar. Watch it below:

Toy Story OF TERROR! arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, and for download on Disney Movies Anywhere on Tuesday, August 19th! You can pre-order the discs from Amazon now.
