Pixar Reveals ‘Lava,’ A New Short Spanning Millions Of Years

June 20, 2014 by Samad Rizvi 4 Comments

Inside Out, Pixar’s 2015 feature film, is now less than one year away. The film has been garnering significant buzz in recent weeks, with screenings of clips occurring at the Annecy Film Festival. The studio has customarily attached a short film with its features in theaters, but we did not have confirmation of which short we would be seeing next year – until now, that is. After the break, check out the poster and synopsis for the short entitled Lava.

Celebrating that its release is now less than one year away, Disney/Pixar unveiled Lava, which is being described as a musical love story in its brief synopsis:

Inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, “Lava” is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years.

From Pixar Animation Studios, director James Ford Murphy and producer Andrea Warren, “Lava” opens in theaters on June 19, 2015, in front of “Inside Out.”

In the poster, we see that the animals in the water and in the sky all have mates; however, in the center, we see a volcano, who appears to be alone, suggesting (along with the title) that the volcano will be the star. We will have to wait and see whether the “musical” aspect will be similar more to Pixar’s Boundin’, which had musical lyrics, or to last year’s The Blue Umbrella, which featured music that was lyric-less.

The short is being directed by James Ford Murphy, a Pixar veteran who has been with the studio since A Bug’s Life. Similar to several of the directors for Pixar shorts, Murphy is a first-time director, who just may be able to bring us a unique vision. At the studio, the shorts have proven to be more inventive and bold than the features, almost playing the role of a testing ground for concepts audiences may or may not be able to manage for an entire feature film. It is for that reason that Pixar shorts continue to be projects that we look forward to every year.

Lava hits theaters on June 19th, 2015, alongside Inside Out!
