Review: “Movies R Fun” From Pixar’s Josh Cooley Is A Clever Nod To Famous Film Moments

Josh Cooley is a story supervisor at Pixar who has worked several of the studio’s films, such as The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Up, and even contributed a voice to the recent TV special, Toy Story OF TERROR! Like many of us humans, though, he has other interests as well. He has collaborated with Chronicle Books to release a great little book which celebrates famous moments in film through clever artwork. The result is creative and humorous – get a preview after the break!

Movies R Fun By Josh Cooley

Inspired by the idea of sharing his favorite films with his young daughter, but realizing that many of them might be inappropriate for her age, Cooley created a way to do so without showing her the actual films. He designed a book, which looks much like a storybook that would normally be targeted towards children, that features a prominent moment from several films. Even better is that he continued the “children’s book theme” throughout the book, so the artwork and small bits of text that appear within are all made to appear as if you opened up a book aimed at children.

Entitled, “Movies R Fun!,” many of the moments reflected in the book are certainly not from kid-friendly scenes – an alien bursting out of a chest, the head of a horse lying bloody in a bed, and a possessed human vomiting profusely are only a few of the examples. Cooley had actually previously sold copies of the book independently at Comic Con, but it sold out and created a stir on the web. Chronicle’s version is updated with new pages for readers to enjoy.

Capitalizing on the tongue-in-cheek nature of the book, Chronicle has also released a hilarious video promoting the book as fun for the whole family. The video is a must-watch:

“Movies R Fun” is a book that will make for the perfect gift item to friends (or simply to yourself). It is a small book that will beg to sit on your coffee table – at worst it will be a conversation starter, but I have a feeling that it will be much more than that. It is available now at retailers around the country, including Amazon and Chronicle Books.
