Preview: ‘Small Fry’ Buzz Lightyear D23 Expo Exclusive Figure

August 1, 2013 by Samad Rizvi Leave a Comment

With each Toy Story feature film, we are introduced to new toys, many of which have gone on to become fan favorites. When the trilogy ended and the franchise moved on to short films called Toy Story Toons, the memorable debuts did not stop there. Great new characters graced the screen, as they creatively recalled toys we often encounter every day. Some of the best gags in the Toy Story films are seeing hilarious versions of toys we grew up with. In the Toy Story Toon entitled Small Fry, Buzz Lightyear gets switched out with a kid’s meal version and hilarity ensues. The plot’s parody/celebration of fast food toys had fans clamoring for the release of the toys seen in the short. At the D23 Expo next week, we get one step closer to that reality as Mattel is releasing an exclusive Small Fry Buzz Lightyear figure. Take a look and find out how much it will cost after the break!

Small Fry Buzz Lightyear Figure - eBay

At the 2011 D23 Expo, Mattel released a Woody Marionette figure, a very cool collector’s item which recreated the classic cowboy figure seen in scenes of Toy Story 2. It looks like the toy company will top that with this year’s Buzz Lightyear. A few figures seem to have slipped  out before the Expo, as they have been showing up on eBay recently (here, here, and here, for now).  The figure, which was first seen in the Poultry Palace restaurant in Small Fry, will be packaged in a box made to resemble a happy meal container from the fictional fast food chain. Whoever came up with the idea for the packaging deserves the chance to make the packaging for everything, ever.

According to the D23 Expo website, the figure will be available at the Mattel pop-up shop inside the Disney Consumer Products pavilion. It will retail for $20 and will likely be a limited-edition figure, so if you are attending the Expo, it would be wise to pick one up as soon as you can make it there. There is no word on how many figures are being made, but again, its great design will likely have many attendees picking this one up. Additionally, the short’s director, Angus MacLane, will be signing the figure for fans at the pavilion on Friday, August 9th from 4:30-5:00pm, so expect the signing to move even more figures.

Our friends at Pixar Post purchased a figure from eBay and posted a video review. For those who cannot make it to the Expo, eBay will likely be the best source for picking one of these up. Expect many more figures to make their way online after the conclusion of the show. There should be a formal announcement by Mattel that may provide further details and hi-res pictures.
