Many have stated that Disney Infinity is simply the Disney corporation’s version of Activision’s Skylanders, a franchise that has earned over $1 billion from sales of its game as well as character figures that can be beamed into the game. While Disney Infinity also allows players to purchase and send characters into the game, its power discs that unlock items and power-ups differentiates it from Activision’s blockbuster game. The starter pack for Infinity will include one power disc, but other discs will be sold in blind packs. After the break, take a look at 20 power discs that will be included in Series 1!
The power disc blind packs will include one round and one hexagonal disc, which will both fit on the Disney Infinity mat that interacts with the gaming system. The round discs can be placed underneath the character figures and can even be stacked to unlock multiple abilities for the game character. This first wave of Series 1 will include 16 hexagonal discs and 4 round discs, guaranteeing that players will end up with duplicates in their search for additional discs, which will certainly lead to trading. We recently learned that some discs would be less available than others, making them more rare and valuable to those who find them.
Additionally, we learned that Disney Infinity starter packs, figures, and power discs would also be sold in Disney Stores and on DisneyStore.com, a strong indication of how much support Disney is throwing behind this new platform, considering no other video games are currently sold through the retailer.
The online shop has just started accepting pre-orders for Disney Infinity as well as its add-ons (via Stitch Kingdom). While a low-res image of 20 of the power discs is provided by the retailer (above), I have captured close-ups, which you can take a look at below:
Disney and Pixar properties that are included in this first series of power discs are Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, Cars, Toy Story, Bolt, Dumbo, Cinderella, Lilo & Stitch, Mulan, Wreck-It Ralph, Tangled, Finding Nemo, Pirates of the Caribbean, Up, and the property that started it all, Mickey Mouse. There are some properties that receive double billing in Series 1, with the discs unlocking a variety of backgrounds, items, and power-ups.
Here is the packaging for the blind packs, which may change before release (image via Amazon):
After being pushed back from its original June launch date, Disney Infinity is scheduled for release in North America on August 18.
