February 22, 2013 by Samad Rizvi Leave a Comment

Disney Infinity is an ambitious new gaming platform that will allow gamers to venture into the world of select Disney/Pixar properties, such as Monsters University, The Incredibles and Pirates of the Caribbean. Additionally, the Toy Box mode within the game lets the various characters interact with one another, potentially making this the largest Disney crossover ever. While the the three aforementioned properties will be included in the Starter Pack, there will be three more playsets that can be purchased at launch. This morning, Disney Interactive has officially unveiled the Cars playset. Get a closer look with a new trailer and more than 30 images after the break!

Here are the official details of the Cars playset, as well as the racing characters’ integration into the Toy Box Mode:

Today, Disney Interactive is unveiling Cars as the fourth play set in Disney Infinity with a new set of images, screenshots, and a gameplay trailer from the play set. Disney Infinity is the company’s most ambitious gaming initiative ever, and the Cars play set adds to the previously-announced play sets of The Incredibles, Monsters University and Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Cars play set allows gamers to take on the role of Lightning McQueen, Mater, Holley Shiftwell and Francesco Bernoulli and enter the virtual world of Radiator Springs, where they will prepare the town for a big international racing event. Key highlights include:

  • Racing and Customization: players will be able to race through town on full sized tracks and pull off amazing, gravity defying feats in a no-holds-barred stunt park. Additionally, players can customize the town, exploring the outskirts of the city and towing all types of vehicles to make way for tourists.
  • Play Set: The Cars play set adds driving/racing play mechanics and track pieces to the Toy Box allowing players to create all-new racing challenges, build and customize tracks and much more.
  • Toy Box mode: Lightning, Mater, Holley and Francesco are able to interact with all of the previously revealed characters from The Incredibles, Monsters University and Pirates of the Caribbean.

One of the aspects of Disney Infinity that sets it apart from the traditional game is its usage of high-quality character figurines that will interface with the game, as players can beam a character in and out of the game simply by placing its corresponding figurine onto a hexagonal mat connected to the gaming system. After being given a chance to handle them, I saw that these were not made of cheap plastic. Making them durable will not only make them persist for a longer period of time, but will also leave collectors pining for more. Here are some photos of the newly announced Cars figurines:

Along with the physical figures, the Toy Box mode creates an exciting new opportunity for players and Disney fans, alike. After attaining the figurines, gamers unlock the ability to utilize them in Toy Box, where the characters from distinct playsets can interact with one another. The likes of Mike Wazowski, Davy Jones, Syndrome, and Mater can join forces or compete, as seen in one of the screenshots below:
