PixArt: May 2012 Feature II – Carl and Ellie

It doesn’t get much sweeter than this. This adorable take on Carl and Ellie Fredricksen from UP comes to us all the way from the Netherlands. Illustrator and Designer Marloes de Vries has submitted this precious piece and we think it captures the relationship perfectly. Check out the other great images on Marloes’ site and read on to learn more about the artist in her own words.

Name: Marloes de Vries

Website/Blog/Portfolio: www.marloesdevries.com / marloesdevries.tumblr.com

I currently live in… The Netherlands, Europe

I consider my hometown to be… The Netherlands, although, I do hope to live in other countries as well. I’m secretly dreaming of an apartment in New York and maybe a country house in France. A girl can dream right? 🙂

My Favorite Pixar Movie is …
Although I love almost every Pixar movie, I have to go with Up – It’s the storyline, combined with the vivid colors and the characters (grumpy old man + bouncy talkative kid = WIN).

My Favorite Pixar character is…
I have to pick? Man. I have a favorite character for every movie. I’m not sure if I can pick just one. But if you insist: I quite like Dory from Finding Nemo.

Tell us about your piece:
I love one specific bit in the movie Up. It’s the story of Carl and Ellie. It’s such a soft, loving scene in the movie. Their love is inspiring and something we all hope to find I think. I portrayed Carl and Ellie in their younger days, enjoying each other’s company. I also like the small details of the scene: Carl is big and square where is Ellie small and fragile. Carl has a sturdy lamp and mug on his square table. Ellie has a porcelain tea cup and lamp of glass on an elegant side table. Also, their chairs are characteristic. I love details like that.

Who/What inspires you?
Every day things we might take for granted. Also mid-century illustration because it’s still relative now. Mary Blair never goes out of fashion.

Recommend something, anything to our readers:
Never let anyone tell you you can not do something. Because you can do anything if you set your mind to it. Like Walt Disney said: “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Shameless self-promotion:
You can find my latest works on my Tumblr blog and follow me on Twitter.

Our thanks to Marloes for her wonderful contribution. If you’d like to be a featured PixArt Artist, contact us and send a link to your portfolio.
