Why Hasn’t There Been An ‘Incredibles’ Sequel?

October 26, 2011 by Samad Rizvi 39 Comments

Ever since The Incredibles hit theatres, many fans have been clamoring for a sequel. It is an interesting situation, as many people have also said that they would rather Pixar work on original films. The studio answered that call this year when they announced a slate of brand new films, one taking place in a world where dinosaurs are still roaming around and the other that takes viewers inside the human mind. However, The Incredibles seems to be the one main exception to the “no sequel” call from movie buffs. The film’s director, Brad Bird, was asked by Movies.com (via First Showing), why we have yet to see a sequel to his big hit. His answer? Oh yeah – we already knew the answer.

Pixar wants Brad Bird at the helm and he has yet to thoroughly develop a story that would fit a film’s running time:

“I think the reason it hasn’t [happened] yet is because the studio would like me to do it, if there were another Incredibles,” he explained. “And I’ve told them that I’m not really friendly to have someone else take away my child.” He indicated he had come up with several concepts which he thinks would make for a good sequel, but refuses to rush them into production just for the sake of the film’s moneymaking potential. “I would like to think that I have several good ideas that could be incorporated into a next Incredibles, but I don’t have a whole movie yet, and the last thing I want to do is do it just because it would open big, or something like that.”

Not only did Bird direct the film, but he also wrote it, so his vision was incredibly important to the way the film turned out. It makes sense that both he and Pixar would want him to be the go-to guy for a sequel if it ever happens.

Additionally, as we have heard in many interviews with various individuals at Pixar, Bird does not want to move ahead with a sequel until he has developed a great idea for the storyline:

“I want to do it because I have something that will be as good or better than the original,” he insisted. “Toy Story 2 was, to me, a perfect sequel, because it absolutely respected the first film but found new places to go without selling out its characters. So if I could come up with an idea that is to Incredibles that Toy Story 2 is to Toy Story, I would do it in a second.”

So, the reasons why we haven’t gotten a sequel to The Incredibles yet are not surprising. Brad Bird has not spent a ton of time working on ideas for a sequel and therefore has not developed a good enough roadmap for the potential film’s story.

Will we ever get to see a sequel? Do you want to see The Incredibles 2 get made? Comment below on what you think.
