At a 20th Anniversary screening of City Slickers on Friday night, Billy Crystal had a chance to speak about his upcoming role in the prequel film, Monsters University. Returning as the voice of the hilarious Mike Wazowski, Crystal spoke with Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex blog, who moderated the event. Apparently, the actor had just finished working on an extensive voicing session for the film, and his voice was a bit hoarse. Read on for some thought from Billy Crystal on the highly anticipated Monsters University!
Talking about working with actor John Goodman (voice of Sulley) again, Crystal states:
“We’re having a blast together,” Crystal said Friday after a marathon recording session for “Monsters University,” which is planned for summer of 2013. “It’s really a great script, it’s really funny.”
Additionally, while he does not provide further plot details (the film isn’t due out for two years, so the secrecy is expected), he does leave us with a new tidbit:
“It’s college pranks with monsters. And I wear a retainer. Mike has a retainer.”
Mike Wazowski will wear a retainer! Considering the size of his mouth (he is just a giant head with legs and feet), the retainer will inevitably lead to some hilarity.
While we are still awaiting new details and artwork from the film, it will come as no surprise that this will likely be one of the most imaginative films in the Pixar catalog. The unique Monsters, Inc. world provided the studio with unlimited possibilities, so revisiting it has to bring new wonder and excitement. However, unlimited possibility also comes with its drawbacks – during the making of the original film, the Pixar employees working on it sometimes had difficulty narrowing down story ideas and characters, just because literally anything was possible. Setting the ground rules for a film like this is important. I have no doubt Pixar will succeed in that area once again.
We will have more information about this prequel film next weekend, as Pixar is holding a panel about the film at D23. Meanwhile, make sure to check out the full article on Hero Complex.
Monsters University hits theaters on June 21, 2013.
