First, we had an untitled Pixar film scheduled for release on November 27, 2013. Now, we have another brand new film from the animation studio, but nary a detail on what the film will be called. Box Office Mojo is reporting that Disney has updated their release schedule and plopped in a Pixar film for release on May 30, 2014. What could this film be? Original characters or a sequel?
We have known for quite some time that Monsters, Inc. and Up director Pete Docter has been working on a mystery project. Many assumed his film to be the one coming in late 2013. However, with this new addition, it is possible that this could be the Pete Docter film we have been waiting for.
With the release almost three years away, it may be a while before we hear any more about this project. I believe this is the new approach that Disney and Pixar are taking to avoid another newt from happening – announce release dates, but remain silent on film specifics until closer to release. Newt, along with Cars 2 and Brave, were all announced together long before their release. However, newt was canceled (or at least shelved, indefinitely). The downside to announcing all of their “in-production” films very early is that some may never make it to the finish line. Given Pixar’s secrecy, other than not announcing release dates, this seems to be the most cautious method to letting the industry (and fans) know about its upcoming films that are far down the line.
Stay tuned for more updates as they happen!
