SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques) is an annual conference and exhibition highlighting computer graphics. Each year, Pixar’s RenderMan, the studio’s software used throughout the movie industry that renders 3D animation and visual effects, has a great booth at the conference, where talks are held and great giveaways are handed out. Wind-up teapots have become a staple giveaway at the booth, with a line of hundreds winding up and down the show floor, as they wait for a chance to get their hands on the collectible. While last year’s design was based on Mr. Potato Head, this year’s remains a mystery (UPDATE: no more! – the design has been revealed below). The official Facebook page for the Walking Teapot has provided us with a clue, though, which you can view below!
Considering that the design of the teapots often ties into the Pixar film of the year, it is possible that we are looking at the silhouette of a Cars-inspired teapot. Add the fact that the teapot is making its way across a road and that theory seems even more likely. We will not know for sure until it is fully revealed next week.
The only way to get your hands on one of these cute little teapots is to make your way to SIGGRAPH, being held next week in Vancouver, August 7-11. Keep your eyes peeled on the collectible’s Facebook fan page for updates on RenderMan’s Walking Teapot.
UPDATE (8/9/11 2:00 AM): On Twitter, Pixar’s Peter Moxom has revealed the main design of the teapot, which you can check out below:
It will be fun to find out what variants there will be on the main design of the teapot. Last year, there were slight color variations, and this year will likely follow suit. The thing is just so darn cute!
The teapots will be given away at Pixar’s RenderMan booth August 9-11 between 1 and 1:30. Best of luck getting your hands on one of these!
