CinemaCon is an event where studios preview their upcoming titles to theater owners. Last year, when the event was still called ShoWest, it was reported that many in attendance cried during a screening of an unfinished copy of Toy Story 3. That was our first clue that the studio had created another fantastic film. This year, Disney has shared something else, in the form of an official title. We already knew another Monsters, Inc. film was coming but now we have an actual title: Monsters University.
A few months back, there was a leak from a catalog overseas that revealed that the Monsters, Inc. sequel actually was not a sequel at all, but was actually a prequel. However, the information was not unveiled through official channels, so we could not confirm it.
Our first clue that the film would not have the ‘Inc.’ in the title came from Disney Legend Floyd Norman. In a series of tweets, he referred to the film as “Monsters2.” If the film was to be a prequel, then it would likely take place before the scare factory was chugging along. The new title confirms that the film will be taking place in the Monsters, Inc. universe, but will be concentrated in the surroundings of a university. The world created in the first film was so creative, but the ending to the first film was so well done. The prequel route ensures that the ideas from the original film will be used but its perfect ending will remain untouched.
Word is that the film will follow Mike and Sulley and they may not be the best of friends at first. We will likely have more details and an official description of the film soon. To read our original take on a Monsters, Inc. prequel, click here.
