Up by Kamal Masrun

We are thrilled with this outrageously original piece from Malaysian artist tanglong. Based on his favorite Pixar movie, the artist says this is the “Down” version of Up. You can check out more of his great work at his deviantART page. He’s got some great takes on classic characters and personalities. Lots of fun designs that are worth a look. We hope to see more from this fun artist. Read on for more about him in his own words below.

Name: Kamal Bin Masrun

Website/Blog/Portfolio: http://tanglong.deviantart.com

I currently live in…Perak, Malaysia

My Favorite Pixar Movie is…

The Incredibles, Cars, and Ratatouille.

My Favorite Pixar character…

Oh, I have a lot – especially the sidekick characters like Bomb Voyage from The Incredibles, Bigfoot from Monsters, Inc., and Mac the trucker from Cars. Their roles may be small, but they help the hero come to life in the story.

Tell us about your piece:

Up is one of my favorite movies. I always love to watch family movies, comedies especially. It’s a cartoon – of course it has some comedic elements in it. I had trouble thinking about how to re-establish the already good character design. I came up with this! I tried to avoid too much exaggeration in the design. It took me two days of struggle with my 10-month-old baby and avoiding spending some time with the wife to finish this. As long as the piece came out good, she was okay with that!

Who/What inspires you?

For so many years, I’ve been inspired by a lot of great artists. One of my biggest influences is Sean (Cheek) Galloway.  Starting from there I began to mix his style with great artists like Bandalmas, Metalbantam, and some French artists and animators. In this piece, it came to me naturally. It shows many years of experimenting with other artists’ style and practicing. I love animation so much that I can’t avoid having an animation-like style. At least that’s what my friends tell me.

Recommend something, anything to our readers:

My favorite book is “BONE.” I’ve also always dreamed of making a comic like “CASTLE WAITING.”

Where can we follow your work?

I have my own self-published artbook. If you are interested e-mail me. Other than that, I do some freelance, commissions, designing, shirt/merchandise printing, and pretty much anything that involves the arts and graphics. There’s more of my work on my deviantART page.
