Amazon has listed a 4-disc Toy Story 3 Blu-ray set with a release date of December 19, 2010. What’s on it? That’s a good question, but one there is no available answer for yet, as there are no accompanying details or images. The suggested retail price of $45.99 matches that of the standard 4-disc Toy Story 3 set coming on November 2, but Amazon is selling this mystery set at $31.99, a few dollars more than the previously listed one. Could this possibly be the rumored Blu-ray 3D set?
UPDATE: This has been debunked.
Disney is already releasing a Blu-ray 3D set for A Christmas Carol in November. It would not be a tough decision for them to decide to release a 3D version of Toy Story 3 just in time for the holiday season. December 19 is a week before Christmas, when most people are still shopping for presents. Slipping a Blu-ray 3D Toy Story 3 set into that timeframe would allow them to take advantage of the busiest shopping season of the year.
Until Amazon updates with more information, or Disney issues a press release on the matter, we’ll be in the dark. Let the speculation begin! Is this an error on Amazon’s part, or did we just scoop the release date for an impending Blu-ray 3D Toy Story 3 set? If it is not a 3D set, then what else could it be?
EDIT: It has come to my attention that Blu-ray.com had an article about this up on Saturday. While I found the listing on Amazon independent of them, they DID have the story up first.
Additionally, as The Pixar Blog noted, December 19 is a Sunday, while new releases are usually released on Tuesdays. If this is actually the Blu-ray 3D set, perhaps Disney will unconventionally release it on a Sunday to have it on sale for a few more days in the holiday shopping season. On the other hand, the December 19 listing may just be incorrect. Stay tuned.
UPDATE (9/16): Amazon has updated their listing for this set, and now says that it is a “Spanish Edition” of the Toy Story 3 4-Disc Blu-ray/DVD set. There is already a Spanish edition of the 1-Disc DVD set, so it makes sense for Disney to release a Spanish version of the major Blu-ray set. There was no Blu-ray 3D set listed in the press release for the Toy Story 3 Blu-ray and DVD sets from earlier in the week, so we may not see this for some time. Disney and Pixar may just be waiting for 3D to become more popular in households.
Burned by speculation!
