Release Date for Monsters, Inc. 2 Moved Up In North America

August 5, 2010 by Samad Rizvi 1 Comment

We are now two weeks closer to the release of Monsters, Inc. 2 as Walt Disney Pictures announced earlier today that the Pixar sequel will hit theatres on November 2, 2012. This is likely a response to yesterday’s announcement by Summit Entertainment that they were setting the release date for the final part of the Twilight Saga for November 16. To avoid competition from another surefire blockbuster, Disney made the smart decision to bump Monsters, Inc. 2 up by two weeks.

Interestingly, this summer followed a similar pattern, with Pixar’s Toy Story 3 being released on June 18, and Twilight Saga: Eclipse seeing release two weeks later. The two week difference between the two allowed Toy Story 3 to remain at the top of the North American box office for two weekends. Even after Eclipse made its debut, Toy Story 3 managed to continue its success at the box office, where it is now nearing $400 million in the US and Canada. Disney and Pixar  saw the success of this summer’s release strategy with the newest Toy Story film and may have applied it to Monsters, Inc. 2.

Also in today’s announcement was the official removal of the previously cancelled Pixar project, newt, from the release calendar. Knowledge of the project’s uncertain future had come to light a few months ago, and the removal from Disney’s calendar may be the official “nail-in-the-coffin” for newt.

Monsters, Inc. 2 is set for release on November 2, 2012 in the US and Canada.
