PS3: Toy Story Collector’s Edition

July 16, 2010 by Samad Rizvi

Toy Story Collector's Edition hits shelves on Aug. 17

Sony’s PS3 has been landing some cool exclusives lately. Hot on the heels of PS3’s exclusive Zurg playable character in Toy Story 3 The Video Game, Sony’s console will be the only place to get the Toy Story Collector’s Edition. What is it? Good question. It is essentially a Blu-Ray disc hybrid of the previously released video game and the original Toy Story film. Yep, both the video game and the movie are on one disc!

The official product description for the Toy Story Collector’s Edition follows:

Celebrate the joy of play in Toy Story 3: The Video Game! Fans can play as Buzz, Woody or Jessie as they run, ride and fly through scenes inspired by the upcoming release of the Disney•Pixar animated film, Toy Story 3. Experience key moments, interact with new and returning characters, and visit locations seen in the film. The unique Toy Box mode allows players to unleash their imagination and creativity in a new open world and play with Andy’s toys their way. As Buzz, Woody or Jessie, players can choose what activities they want to do and the order they wish to do them. The more they use their imagination and create their own story, the more they get rewarded. In addition, Emperor Zurg, one of the most beloved villains of the Disney•PixarToy Story franchise, will be a playable character exclusively on the PlayStation 3 system. The PS3 version will also be one of the first games to market featuring the PlayStation Move’s motion controller compatible gameplay. Following the game’s launch, PS3 players will be able to download mini-games that will be playable with the PlayStation Move when the new motion controller is available to consumers this fall. Also, for the first time included on the PlayStation 3 disc is the full length Blu-ray Movie – Toy Story the original motion picture. Toy Story the Movie Synopsis : It’s tough being a toy. One day, you’re at the top of the heap; the next, you’re down in the dumps – literally. Cowboy-toy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) feels threatened when space ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) arrives. But they’re both lost when the family moves – and finding their way home is only half the adventure.

The Toy Story Collector’s Edition is an interesting product. No doubt Sony and movie studios will be watching to see its performance at retail. If it proves to be successful, be prepared for more of these hybrid Blu-Ray discs.

Now, you may ask, “Why does it have to be exclusive to the PS3?”. That ultimately falls to the disc format that the PS3 is capable of playing. The PS3 is the only gaming console capable of playing Blu-Ray discs, whose large storage capacity allows for undertakings such as this.

Toy Story Collector’s Edition, exclusively available for the PS3, is due for release on Aug. 17 and will retail for $64.99.
