With each Toy Story feature film, we are introduced to new toys, many of which have gone on to become fan favorites. When the trilogy ended and the franchise moved on to short films called Toy Story Toons, the memorable debuts did not stop there. Great new characters graced the screen, as they creatively recalled toys we often encounter every day. Some of the best gags in the Toy Story films are seeing hilarious versions of toys we grew up with. In the Toy Story Toon entitled Small Fry, Buzz Lightyear gets switched out with a kid’s meal version and hilarity ensues. The plot’s parody/celebration of fast food toys had fans clamoring for the release of the toys seen in the short. At the D23 Expo next week, we get one step closer to that reality as Mattel is releasing an exclusive Small Fry Buzz Lightyear figure. Take a look and find out how much it will cost after the break!
'Toy Story' Shorts News
Pixar films are often praised for their soundtracks in addition to their stories and characters. While we have access to soundtracks for the feature films, it is rare for the music from a Pixar short to be distributed outside of the studio. That changes with the latest Toy Story Toon, PartySaurus Rex, for which Grammy award-winning artist BT contributed the catchy tub-thumping music. Today, Disney and Pixar made the track available for download!
Often, we have to wait a number of months after theater premieres before we have the opportunity to see Pixar films on the small screen. While the feature films make their way from theaters to Blu-rays and DVDs to premium movie channels before finally playing on TV sets around the country, Pixar shorts are a different story. The latest Toy Story Toon, entitled Partysaurus Rex, has been playing with Finding Nemo 3D for the last month. It will now be providing a larger audience with the ability to laugh at its hysterical storyline, as it will premiere Monday night on the Disney Channel.
Toy Story‘s Rex has consistently been one of the funniest characters in the series due to his exaggerated anxious personality and preference in avoiding confrontations. In the newest Toy Story Toon, Partysaurus Rex, the green dinosaur is given the spotlight in a story where he starts up a party with toys who are stuck at the bottom of the bathtub. Two stills have already been released, along with a 30-second clip, but we now have two more stills that give us a closer look at the new bath toys and also confirm that Woody and the gang are back. Take a look at the hi-res stills after the break!
Last week, Disney/Pixar officially unveiled the third Toy Story Toon, Partysaurus Rex, with first details and two new images from the short. We learned that it would center around Rex leading a rave-style party in a bathtub, which may be challenging to think about before you have seen it. Imagine no longer, as we have our first look at footage from the new short with a 40-second clip. Take a look at the clip in HD after the break! (UPDATE: After being taken down Wednesday, the video is now back up.)
When Toy Story 3 came to an end (spoiler alert!), Andy’s story was finished as he donated his toys to the adorable Bonnie. Pixar has found a way to continue to tell stories involving Buzz, Woody, Barbie, Ken, and the rest of the gang without stepping on the toes of the fantastic trilogy – they have been releasing Toy Story Toons, shorts starring the lovable toys. Attached to Pixar and Disney films, we have already seen two, and now a third has been officially announced. Take a look at the first images and find out the first details of Toy Story: Partysaurus Rex after the break! [Read more...]
One of the coolest aspects of Pixar’s newest Toy Story Toon, Small Fry, is seeing all the new toy characters who grace the screen. The story of the short has Buzz Lightyear joining a support group for unwanted fast food meal toys. Anyone who has collected Happy Meal toys knows that there have been some incredibly goofy toys over the years. Through its Toy Story Facebook Page, Disney/Pixar has started releasing bios for the new characters. Check out the images and bios after the jump. [Read more...]
If we’ve learned one thing from Pixar’s Toy Story trilogy of films, it is this: It’s not easy being a toy. The new Toy Story Toon, Small Fry, currently playing in theatres with Disney’s The Muppets, further emphasizes this point and expands on the idea that all a toy wants is to be played with. The setup is great – Buzz Lightyear finds himself left behind at a fast food restaurant. In his attempt to escape, he accidentally comes across a group of discarded Fun Meal toys. In the meantime, a tiny Fun Meal sized version of Buzz stows away in Bonnie’s backpack hoping to get some playtime at home. The short intercuts between the two situations. [Read more...]

Courtesy of IGN, we have two more images from the short, which has Buzz Lightyear being switched out with a tiny fast-food version of himself. One of the greatest reveals at today’s Pixar Short Films panel was the confirmation of the next Toy Story Toon. Entitled “Small Fry,” the short refocuses on Buzz after placing Barbie and Ken in the spotlight for the first Toy Story short, Hawaiian Vacation. Not only did director Angus MacLane provide the title of the upcoming short, he also spoke briefly about the set-up for the short and surprised the audience with a short clip as well. Pixar had a few surprises up its sleeve during their shorts panel at D23, where they showcased many of the studio’s shorts in celebration of the animation giant’s 25th Anniversary. Not only did La Luna play before one of its largest audiences – there was also confirmation from director Enrico Casarosa that the short would play before Brave. Also, while we knew that the next Toy Story Toon would play before The Muppets in November, we had not heard any details about the storyline or even the title of the short. Well, we have news on that now, too – the new short will be called “Small Fry.” Read on for more about these exciting tidbits! [Read more...]
When the credits rolled at the end of Toy Story 3, after composing myself, I began to think that I had just watched one of the greatest endings to a film trilogy. I was happy when Pixar and director Lee Unkrich said that they viewed the third film as the final feature film with Andy. However, the toys have found a way to continue on, in the hands of adorable new owner Bonnie. Continuing the saga of these toys in the medium of shorts sounded like a great idea, as it allowed the feature films to stand on their own as one cohesive animal without the possibility of damage from a sequel. After watching the short a few times, it is clear that we have another great Pixar short on our hands. Check out my spoiler-free review here! [Read more...]
Not only is Cars 2 arriving in theaters tomorrow, but Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation will be debuting as well. While I am currently working on a review of the short, you should know that Pixar has once again turned out a great Toy Story film. It may only be about six minutes long, but it sure is nice to see the gang once again. Disney/Pixar has released a beautiful new still from the short, which you can view in hi-res here! Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation recently received its own page on Pixar’s official website, providing us some details and a first look at the full logo for the short. Cycling through the short’s page, you come across three separate sections – “The Tale,” “The Characters,” and “Behind The Scenes.” While we already knew much of what is detailed in those three areas, there are small details that had not been known until now. As somebody who has already seen the short (and loved it), you can rest assured that none of this spoils the plot for the film. Take a look at the logo and some screenshots from Pixar’s website here! After the success of Cars Toons, Pixar knew it had a method for keeping the Toy Story franchise alive: shorts. Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the gang are some of the most well-known characters in film today and have become an important part of pop culture. On top of that, the toys have become beloved characters to the generation that grew up with the franchise as well as to the new generation of children today. It is not hard to see why Pixar did not want to let go of these characters. Called Toy Story Toons, the first one will make its debut with Cars 2 next month, followed closely be a second, which will accompany The Muppets in November. We have a hi-res image of the Toy Story Toons logo, which you can check out here! [Read more...]
Pixar invited me to their studio in Emeryville last week for an extensive press event for Cars 2 and Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation. While the second day of the junket primarily focused on the Cars sequel, the first day was all about the first Toy Story Toon. The short is one of two that we will be seeing this year, as the second will debut alongside The Muppets in November. We will likely see more after this year, as the Toy Story short does a great job of transitioning to the format of a short film. [Read more...]
A few weeks ago, I was invited to attend a press junket at Pixar in Emeryville, California, where attendees would be viewing the Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation short, 26 minutes of Cars 2, and speaking with the filmmakers behind the projects. Needless to say, I was excited and honored by the invitation, which I gladly accepted. Read on for an introduction to the first part of the multi-day media event. [Read more...]
