Over the past few years, there have been more shorts produced by Pixar than ever before in its 25+ year history. The staff size at the studio continues to grow, especially with the opening of Pixar Canada, a sister studio that primarily works on shorts of established properties such as Cars and Toy Story. In addition to the yearly Pixar shorts that accompany its feature films, it has been the release of the Cars and Toy Story Toons that have increased its output of short films. While all the Toy Story shorts thusfar have premiered in theaters, the Cars shorts have mostly debuted on the small screen. Three new Cars Toon “shorty shorts” make their debut tonight on the Disney Channel. Find details and images after the break!
Yesterday, Disney provided me with an extensive tour of its upcoming merchandise for the next few months. Unsurprisingly, given their popularity, we will be seeing new toy lines from both the Toy Story and Cars franchises. With Monsters University still a year away, the big focus is on Brave merch at the moment, though, as bow and arrow sets continue to sell out across Disney Stores and other retailers. After the break, get a preview of some of the merchandise based on Pixar films you can expect to see at retailers soon. [Read more...]
Pixar’s upcoming short, Air Mater, is a significant one for a couple reasons. It is the tenth Cars Toon short, with the previous nine premiering either in theatres, on Blu-ray/DVD, or on the Disney Channel. Air Mater, shipping on the Cars 2 DVD and Blu-ray sets, is also the first one to be fully produced by Pixar Canada, the studio’s Vancouver branch. Looking at the previously released clip and the new images from the film (via The German Pixar Blog), it looks like the film’s animation will be up to par with their Emeryville brethren. Take a look at new images from the short (and its logo) here! [Read more...]

We now have a few more details on Planes, specifically where the airplane characters are set to make their debut. The next Cars Toon short is supposedly going to be the setup for the direct-to-video Planes. [Read more...]

On the same day that we received word about the November 2 Blu-Ray and DVD release of Toy Story 3, there was also news of an impending home release for the short Cars Toons that Pixar has aired on television. Now, on November 2, when you go to pick up your copy of Toy Story 3 (or have it shipped to you), you can also purchase Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Tales. There will be two variations released: a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack and a DVD set.
After the release of Cars in 2006, Pixar has been releasing shorts set in the Cars universe, entitled Mater’s Tall Tales. Each story revolves around Mater telling what is seemingly a tall tale about himself. On Friday, July 30, a new “Cars Toon” is set to premiere on the Disney Channel, “Monster Truck Mater”. This is now the sixth episode in the Mater’s Tall Tales series, following such episodes as “Unidentified Flying Mater”, and “El Materdor”. The official description for the episode follows:
