With a test video of Mike Wazowski taking over Spaceship Earth at Walt Disney World’s Epcot theme park leaking out yesterday, we were left wondering just what the spectacle was tied to. With Epcot closed for the night except to the press, a huge Mike projection was shined upon the iconic Epcot structure, to share the announcement that the Magic Kingdom park at Disney World and the Disneyland and California Adventure parks in California would all remain open for a 24-hour stretch at the start of Memorial Day weekend. Watch the gigantic Mike Wazowski make the announcement after the break!
The general consensus was that this projection would be for one night only, and that was confirmed as Mike’s character shares the news, along with some help from his best friend Sulley, that the Disney Parks would pull an all-nighter for the first time since “Disney One More Day,” which coincided with Leap Day, February 29 in 2012. This will kick off the parks’ “Monstrous Summer” campaign that will promote attractions and events, as well as the upcoming release of the Monsters University film. Mike has the announcement below:
While “Disney One More Day” had the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom parks open, this is the first time that Disney California Adventure will join in. Given the sheer popularity of Cars Land at the California-themed park, it is no surprise that Disney decided to bring that park into the fray as well. Additionally, the Disneyland Park was utterly packed for One More Day, as there turned out to be a ton of interest by locals in hanging out at the park late at night into the early hours of the morning, so having another park to split the crowds will certainly be welcome.
Similar to One More Day, the parks will remain open from May 24th at 6 am to May 25th at 6 am. My wife and I were at Magic Kingdom for the event last year, and while it was incredibly exhausting, it was a memorable night that we will not soon forget. There is something extra magical about staying at a Disney Park for longer than your body can stand.
The Disney Parks Blog shares further details on what attendees of this year’s event can expect:
- In Florida, Magic Kingdom Park will feature a “Monsters University” theme where Mike and Sulley will be the Grand Marshals of the “Celebrate a Dream Come True” day parade and make appearances in Tomorrowland. There will be extra entertainment throughout the day and night, including characters in their pajamas in Town Square during the late night and early morning, and late-night dance parties in and around the courtyard of Cinderella Castle.
- In California, you’ll be able to party the night away at both parks with special entertainment including: a “Monsters University” “TLT Monstrous” Dance Club and Star Wars characters in Tomorrowland and late-night Character Pajama Party in Mickey’s ToonTown at Disneyland park. The new Fantasy Faire Royal Theatre at Disneyland park will become a Royal Dance Hall late at night with a live band and dancing; and guests of Disney California Adventure park will find Monstrous photo opportunities with new “Monsters University” “Dorms” in Hollywood Land and a new “Monsters University” float leading the Pixar Play Parade.
The Mike Wazowski projection, as I described in today’s earlier post detailing the test video, is a great example of what Disney Imagineers are capable of today. I look forward to seeing how else they can implement that technology throughout the various worldwide Disney Parks in the future!
UPDATE 1 (11:55 PM): The Monsters University Facebook page posted another great photo of the projection, which you can click to enlarge and enjoy in hi-res:
Update 2 (4/26/13 12:30 AM): Ricky Brigante of Inside The Magic, who was there at the press event, tweeted an image of a fun flyer that was created to announce the 24-hour “party” at the parks. It is appropriately green:
Looks like Disney already has a hashtag for Twitter ready to go for the all-nighter: #Disney24. Those of you who are going, you may as well save that hashtag in your phone right now. I am sure some who cannot make it would love to follow along!
