Why Hasn’t There Been An ‘Incredibles’ Sequel?

Ever since The Incredibles hit theatres, many fans have been clamoring for a sequel. It is an interesting situation, as many people have also said that they would rather Pixar work on original films. The studio answered that call this year when they announced a slate of brand new films, one taking place in a world where dinosaurs are still roaming around and the other that takes viewers inside the human mind. However, The Incredibles seems to be the one main exception to the “no sequel” call from movie buffs. The film’s director, Brad Bird, was asked by Movies.com (via First Showing), why we have yet to see a sequel to his big hit. His answer? Oh yeah – we already knew the answer.

Pixar wants Brad Bird at the helm and he has yet to thoroughly develop a story that would fit a film’s running time:

“I think the reason it hasn’t [happened] yet is because the studio would like me to do it, if there were another Incredibles,” he explained. “And I’ve told them that I’m not really friendly to have someone else take away my child.” He indicated he had come up with several concepts which he thinks would make for a good sequel, but refuses to rush them into production just for the sake of the film’s moneymaking potential. “I would like to think that I have several good ideas that could be incorporated into a next Incredibles, but I don’t have a whole movie yet, and the last thing I want to do is do it just because it would open big, or something like that.”

Not only did Bird direct the film, but he also wrote it, so his vision was incredibly important to the way the film turned out. It makes sense that both he and Pixar would want him to be the go-to guy for a sequel if it ever happens.

Additionally, as we have heard in many interviews with various individuals at Pixar, Bird does not want to move ahead with a sequel until he has developed a great idea for the storyline:

“I want to do it because I have something that will be as good or better than the original,” he insisted. “Toy Story 2 was, to me, a perfect sequel, because it absolutely respected the first film but found new places to go without selling out its characters. So if I could come up with an idea that is to Incredibles that Toy Story 2 is to Toy Story, I would do it in a second.”

So, the reasons why we haven’t gotten a sequel to The Incredibles yet are not surprising. Brad Bird has not spent a ton of time working on ideas for a sequel and therefore has not developed a good enough roadmap for the potential film’s story.

Will we ever get to see a sequel? Do you want to see The Incredibles 2 get made? Comment below on what you think.

I really hope we see at least one more, if not two or three, really good sequels to The Incredibles. Being a superhero family, there are so many great ideas to choose from!! Maybe too many…. In any case, I hope Brad has a killer idea for a movie ready soon! :)

i honestly think the incredibles is one of pixar’s weakest films. along with finding nemo & toy story 3

Well, then it’s in excellent company.

    • Jibaro009

come on cars and cars 2 can’t be above those three movies….

      • 2323

i have yet to see those films. I was just bored by the incredibles along with finding nemo. ratatoullie, wall-e and up are masterpieces.

    • Srishti Rai

ouch! why do you say that? did you animate the movie??

    • Joseph Galang

wth? are you sure? Finding Nemo is one of Pixar’s blockbusters~
The weakest are the Cars films

      • Eoraptor

Well, the second Cars film is definitely weak. The first one was as strong as any other, and by far their biggest merchandising property ( hence the crapped out sequel) which is one thing I always wondered about… Costumed super-heroes should have been infinitely marketable, and yet… very few toys really came out to support the movie.

I would love to see a sequel to The Incredibles more than just about any other film, but totally understand and respect Pixar and Bird’s integrity in holding off until they have a perfect idea. In terms of if we’ll ever see one; I believe the demand is just too great for them to ignore, I reckon once MI4 is wrapped up and any other Live Action projects and Bird can again focus on animation, he’ll begin to try and get a script together. I have complete faith in Pixar and Brad Bird!

If we look at the hard way Incredibles has almost an identical batch of characters to Fanstastic 4 and that movie got a sequel.
Incredibles was a far more delightful movie to watch so it’s more that deserving of a sequel.

The great thing about Pixar is par Cars 2 that they wait and wait and then whe. You think it’s time they make you wait again for the return of a movie.

Toy Story was 15 years apart from the original. Monsters Inc has a had a huge gap before the return on University. Pixar doesn’t make a franchise of it’s characters like Shrek 4 then a spin off Puss in Boots

It’s more our pleasure first then their business later.

Whoopee for Incrdibles, I wonder who the villain will be?

Pixar is not about business. They make movies keeping us in mind, and because of that, their business naturally soars. If they don’t have a perfect idea, they won’t make a movie on those unstable foundations.

for me it’s ok, I like pixar films I really loved cars 2 is original, with other story completely different than the first one is what a sequel should be it’s pixar they can make a sequel, they are genious

  • Dav

The Incredibles was a fantastic film and i suppose Pixar will only make it if they have a better idea. I think that should be appreciated by all fans. This means that they want to give their customers the best result which is nice to know.

Overall aside from the Incredibles. I think other amazing pixar films are Wall-E, Up, Finding Nemo, and Monsters inc. Wall-E ftw

Cars was ok but still above average for me, i have yet to see Cars 2 though

  • Joseph Galang

Yep. That’s okay for me. As long as they release a perfect concept for a sequel. You know, that’s what I like about Pixar, They can’t release two or more films in a year like DreamWorks Animation does, but their stories are beyond imaginable~

Hope I can be part of Pixar Canada when I graduate LOL

  • Snipe

I would really like to see Pixar make an Incredibles 2, and if they make one I’d like to see Bird direct it. I completely agree with what he said. The last thing I’d want is to see the film get rushed and turn out awful storywise, like Cars 2. That’s when I would NOT want to see it get made. So Brad, we definitely want an Incredibles sequel, but take your time with it. We can wait. ;)

  • Jael Chng

Yes! The Incredibles is my favourite Pixar movie and would love a sequel. I would like to see more of Violet’s teenager tales and also how Jack Jack’s super powers can save the day too. Of course Dashing Dash in his (mis)adventures – @jaelchng:disqus  from Singapore

  • Meggiemac98

I think that The Incredibles 2 would be an AWESOME idea! In act, it’d be super. :D Yeah, I think they should make one…if not b4 I work there (which I absolutely WILL do!), then WHILE!!!

  • Error010

Pixar are a company that pride themselves on producing quality CGI films and with The Incredibles being one of, if not, the their most popular films made, there should be no excuse for making a bad film, considering the amount of time that has passed.

A sequel will happen. When? Nobody quite knows, though Pixar and Brad Brid share a common vision, that the most important part of a film is the story and nailing that is critical. And with that in mind, The Incredibles 2 should be brilliant.

i would love to see an incridiables to, i know that with my family its hard to find a good movie we all enjoy, and i have to admitt the incrediables made my whole family laugh, we have been waiting for soo long for the 2nd to come out, and i will go to the big high dollar movie just to see it, cant wait!! :)

  • Eoraptor

I desperately want to see Incredibles 2. perhaps set a few years down the road from the first. but I also decidedly respect Pixar’s and Brad’s desire not to just pump out a junk sequel like Cars 2. I am content to wait to see college age vi, high-school age dash, and a jackjack just learning to socialize with his powers, and of course, how the world has changed with the reappearance of heroes.  I mean, we all can think of what we ~want~ to see in such a sequel, and anyone who has seen the DVD extras knows how much the first movie changed between initial concept and final product; so the scope is vast for what could come, especially with all the seasoning that Mr. Bird has gotten in the years since the first one came out.

Hopefully it’s just a short matter of time.

The Incredibles was absolutely a wonderful film! In my opinion (as well as my 3 boys) a sequel has got to be made! The Incredibles ROCK!
