Cars 2 Blu-ray Sets Available For Pre-order

It feels like Cars 2 just came out in theaters a few weeks ago. Oh, yeah – it did. That hasn’t stopped various online retailers from listing upcoming Blu-ray sets for the film. Amazon recently listed the standard three-disc set, along with a bigger five-disc set. It is interesting to note that while Blu-ray/DVD sets are available for pre-order, a DVD-only set has yet to be listed. Similar to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, it seems that Blu-ray/DVD combo packs (along with Blu-ray only sets) are being pushed to the forefront. Read on for more details on the home release of Cars 2!

The 3-Disc set (which comes in two different flavors – Blu-ray or DVD packaging) will include:

  • 2 Blu-ray Discs
  • 1 DVD

The 5-Disc set will include:

  • 1 Blu-ray 3D Disc
  • 2 Blu-ray Discs
  • 1 DVD
  • 1 Digital Copy Disc

There is no list of special features and no release date available yet, as we will not see the sets on store shelves for several months. If they follow a similar release schedule to earlier Pixar releases, we should see them in the November time-frame.

UPDATE (7/16/11 2:00 PM): Amazon has also listed a monstrous 11-Disc “Director’s Edition” box set, which includes Blu-ray discs, DVDs, and Digital Copies for Cars, Cars 2, and Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Tales. Director John Lasseter is all over this one – a replica of his signature, along with a John Lassetire figure, accompany the box.

How can there be a Director’s Cut of Cars 2?! What’s unique about Pixar is that it allows the director full creative control over the project without having to deal with studio interference. This especially should be the case now that Lasseter himself has strong control over both Disney and Pixar’s animated films in general. What was in theaters WAS John Lasseter’s cut.

I think they mean the Director’s Edition is the Package, not excatly a Director’s Cut of the film…

I wish they would do something like this for the Toy Story movies. I’d be all over that!
